Ingredients to Steer Clear Of

Harmful Ingredients

These are usually all man made and petroleum based. Basically, they are chemical in nature. Some are natural, but can still harm hair and skin.

Formaldehyde – Although it is natural, and even in the air we breath, it can be quite harmful. Formaldehyde is a simple substance consisting of hydrogen, oxygen and carbon. All natural. However, the fumes it gives off  a gas. Used as a preservative in the cosmetics industry, it releases slowly over time. Remember the FEMA trailer problems after Hurricane Katrina?

Hydantoin DMDM – A preservative and emulsifier. Derived from formaldehyde.

Keratin: Keratin is a natural product, but as the ” Blow Out” products have shown, can be a formaldehyde re-leaser.

Silicone – Dimethicone and Methicone are silicone based polymers. Many haircare products use them to get that sleek look and to allow slip when detangling. May also be seen as: Amino Bispropyl Dimethicone, Aminopropyl Dimethicone, Amodimethicone, Amodimethicone Hydroxystearate, Dimethoxysilyl Ethylenediaminopropyl Dimethicone, Hydroxypropyldimethicone.

Silicon can add build-up on the hair shaft and any build up is going to prevent moisture from getting in. So that alone should deter anyone with dry, frizzy hair. So, avoid the “cones”.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – Surfactants used to make a detergent that suds. Strips hair and makes it straw-like. Because it is a salt, it is drying, and will chemically react to water that has sediments in it or even chemically treated. So well water and even city water may react. Try to use cleansers labeled sulfate-free, but do check the ingredients. Sometimes it is contaminated with a known carcinogen, Dioxane
